France's potato growers have put their losses this season at at least €400mn ($463mn) and asked the state for an exceptional support scheme, after projecting that the national crop will fall about 23 per cent.

The Union Nationale des Producteurs de Pommes de Terre (UNPT), which represents about 20,000 growers and describes France as the world's largest fresh-potato exporter, said on 24 August it expected a national yield of about 37.4 tonnes a hectare in 2026 for ware potatoes. That is 14 per cent below last year's 43.5 tonnes and 13 per cent below a five-year average of 43.1 tonnes.

On the union's own account, it is the lowest in more than 30 years, after the already historic 2022. Set against a planted area already cut about 10 per cent, it would strip close to 2mn tonnes of ware potatoes from the French crop across the fresh, processing and starch markets.

The cut in growing area follows a 2025 glut that left Belgium's free-market quotation at zero for weeks in the spring of that year. Growers across north-west Europe reduced ware-potato plantings for 2026 to about 536,900 hectares from 604,100 – down 16.6 per cent in Belgium, 15.1 per cent in the Netherlands and 9.7 per cent in France – the North-Western European Potato Growers association said in June.

The weather then amplified the cut that was intended to rebalance supply.

UNPT blamed five successive heatwaves and what it called an exceptional water deficit. June and July were the hottest in 86 years at all six French and Belgian potato monitoring points, according to Cropli data. Beauvais, north of Paris, averaged a daily maximum of 27.3°C over the two months, 5.3°C above the 1991-2020 normal and 2.3°C past its own record from the drought summer of 1976; Amiens, in the Somme, beat its 1976 mark by 1.3°C.

A spell of sustained heat stalls tuber bulking, the phase when the tubers put on weight. UNPT warned of smaller sizes, variable dry-matter content and, in places, physiological disorders, and called on buyers to loosen size and quality specifications so the whole of a reduced crop could still be sold.

Official industry prices are yet to show the impact due to this year's later harvest. Belgium's Belgapom quotation for new-crop potatoes opened on 14 August at €200 a tonne and was still €200 a week later. That is below the €500 at which the 2023 season opened and the €300 of 2024, and above 2025's €50 – but each of those openings fell by more than half within weeks as the harvest flooded in. Farmers will be hoping current prices at least hold against the shorter crop.

Growers who sold their crop forward are the most exposed. Processors offered ex-field contracts for this season at about €125 a tonne, a level the North-Western European Potato Growers said in June did not reflect rising production costs, against the €200 the free market is now quoting. Those who signed for 30 to 35 tonnes a hectare are facing yields nearer 32.

"Potatoes on the open market will therefore be in very short supply," said Jan Van Luchene of Bruwier Potatoes, a Belgian merchant, who told FreshPlaza the shortage ran across France, England, Ireland and Belgium, with only the northern Netherlands and part of northern Germany looking "slightly better".

The low contract price was deliberate, Van Luchene said: it gave the industry room to compete on frozen-chip sales in other parts of the world. A spike in spot prices would take that room away. "Last season taught us that there is a limit to the price at which you can sell frozen chips. At a certain point, you can no longer compete with certain regions of the world," he said. If the product became too expensive again, "we'll see China and India stepping in once more."

UNPT said it would not accept members being made to buy back on the open market the volumes they could not grow. It wants France's EGAlim farm-income law, including its force-majeure provisions, applied through the interbranch bodies CNIPT and GIPT. It also asked Paris to open talks with other EU capitals to head off disputes over French volumes contracted abroad.

Agriculture minister Annie Genevard was due to meet prefects on 27 August to calibrate an aid plan covering emergency treasury support and uninsured losses across all farm sectors.

Drought affected 98 of France's départements – its administrative districts – and 57 were in crisis when the ministry last counted in mid-August. She has said the plan must cover both compensation for what farmers have lost and help to restore their capacity to produce next year, with the first tranche of treasury aid left in the prefects' hands. She has declined to put a figure on the plan until they report, while Arnaud Rousseau, president of the FNSEA farm union, has estimated the sector needs billions of euros.

UNPT said the timing was pressing because growers are already deciding what to plant in 2027. Growers in the six European areas ESPG covers multiplied 105,155 hectares of seed potatoes this year, 1.6 per cent less than in 2025, with the four main French-fry varieties down 8.4 per cent, on figures reported by FreshPlaza.

Romania has approved a scheme paying its potato growers up to €300 a hectare ($348). French farmers will be smarting at anything less.
